In this fifth instalment of #WorkoutParty!Trainer, we talk to WorkoutParty!Trainer Faddy about his journey in fitness and what makes him tick.
‘Do it once, do it proper!’
A former national flowboarding champion, Fadzlullah Kamarolah, or just Faddy, has imbued that winning mentality into his current avatar - that of a successful fitness trainer.
How did your journey into fitness begin?
From a young age, I was in my element in the water. Pivoting into flowboarding was simply a result of that. Over time I got better at it, which eventually carried me to the national championship in the sport.
But despite focusing primarily on my own fitness in those times, I always harboured a passion to help others out as well.
I enjoyed pushing people and seeing them succeed in their fitness and sport goals. As a trainer, I specialize in general well being, strength and conditioning.
What has been the most memorable experience in your journey of fitness so far?
As national flowboarding champion, I got the unique opportunity of representing the nation in regional and international tournaments - some of which were held in places such as Abu Dhabi, Cancun and San Diego.
Visiting those places and meeting people from varied cultural upbringings and belonging to different ethnicities, all of whom shared a common passion for flowboarding, was an eye-opening experience.
Those are memories that I will carry with me forever.
What is your fitness mantra?
People unnecessarily complicate fitness. But spending the better part of my athletic life in the water and going, quite literally, with the flow, I came to understand that bringing your mind and body in sync is really the most important aspect of fitness.
As such, something I advocate with everyone I train is to prioritize form over repetitions. It isn’t beneficial if you spam repetitions with incorrect posture or form. Not only will that impede gains, it may also lead to injuries.
On the other hand, even if the number of repetitions you do is limited, the right form is of paramount importance.
It’s like thrashing about in a swimming pool trying to swim faster. If you master the form, you’d require far fewer strokes to move from point A to point B.
How are you adapting to the Covid-19 lockdown and how do you think the situation will change once restrictions are lifted?
It is an incredibly difficult time in the world today but we can overcome it by working together, following social distancing guidelines and keeping up hygiene.
On a personal level, maintaining one’s fitness is also quite advisable. Even if one does contract Covid-19, or any disease for that matter, having heightened fitness levels will definitely aid in fighting it off.
Plus, when we spend so much time indoors nowadays, it is quite possible for one to allocate 20 minutes daily for working out.
By the time the lockdown is lifted, fitness would have become a way of life.
A word of advice for our readers?
Always go with the flow. Whether in the water, while pursuing fitness goals or in life, listen to what your body and mind are saying.
It is your responsibility to keep them functioning at their optimum capacity. Fitness is a great way of doing that!
